In mijn Italiaanse atelier ben ik deze zomer mijn thema Zeegezichten aan het uitbreiden. Het zinderende klimaat (hete luchtstromen vanuit de Toscaanse kust en vanaf de Umbrische bergen) zorgt ervoor dat de zware gemetselde lagen van olieverf prachtig en geleidelijk opdrogen, doordat aan weerskanten de hoge staldeuren de hele dag openstaan. 's Nachts helaas gesloten want de wilde zwijnen en wilde katten struinden dwars door mijn atelier. 's Ochtends kon je hun pootafdrukken tot ver op het land volgen. Everzwijnen met rode poten en katten met kobaltblauwe staarten verdwenen in het bos. Zeegezichten. Daar ben ik regelmatig mee bezig sinds eind jaren tachtig. Het grote doek (200 x 300 cm.) "Noordzee" uit Drieluik Schiermonnikoog uit 1986 werd indertijd tentoongesteld in Rijksmuseum Twenthe. Zeegezichten. Ooit werd ik door Rudie Fuchs"de schilder van heimwee" genoemd. Ik schilder herinneringen die ik soms tientallen jaren met mij meedraag tot het moment dat ik ermee aan de slag moet.. Plotseling dwing ik mijzelf aan een bepaald thema te gaan beginnen. Een dwang die kan ontstaan door een bepaald beeld te zien. In een krant of tijdschrift, op televisie, in een museum of onderweg op reis of iets in je omgeving op te vangen, iets op de radio te horen waarbij plotseling een herinnering opduikt. Zo kan het zijn dat rustieke en stille Hollandse landschappen en wilde Tulpenvelden middenin het jachtige Manhattan in mijn Newyorkse atelier zijn ontstaan. Dat ik op klassieke oude meesters geïnspireerde theaterstukken in Londen schilder, Toscaanse landschappen in Berlijn, Amerikaanse cliche- beelden in Amsterdam en zware Duitse landschappen in Parijs. Mijn grote voorbeeld in deze -het voor de leek chaotisch uitziende reizen van atelier naar atelier- is Caspar David Friedrich, die de meest fantastische en groteske landschappen schilderde in een klein en duister voorkamertje van zijn woonhuis. Als ik in zijn tijd geleefd had zou mijn werk zeker bij de Duitse Romantische Schoolhebben behoord. Ook dan schilderde ik alleen maar Heimweh. Jan Cremer |
